Caboose For Sale

Ex New York Central / Conrail N7-A No. 21559

Built - November 1949

Caboose was acquired from Conrail in 1987, and is used in regular freight service on the Owego & Harford Railway in Owego, NY.  Car has current air brake COTS, roller bearing trucks (built in 1976).  Interior appointments include two conductor's desks (one in each end of the car), four person dinette, fuel-oil fired cooking and heating stove, sink and toilet w/ retention tank (needs to be serviced if you plan to use the toilet system), three full-length bunks (two of which need cushions), icebox, and plentiful storage.  Lights operate on 12VDC battery bank and axle-driven generator.  Functional rear marker lights located on each end.  Windows are plexiglas and most need to be replaced due to UV clouding.  Bays contain two high-backed, "walk-over" seats for viewing the train ahead.

Recent work performed includes roof sealing, partial floorboard replacement, and miscellaneous cutting, welding, and straightening.  The only known mechanical defect is a broken leaf in one of the leaf springs on the southeast corner of the car.

Car was involved in an accident on 1/27/99 when it was struck by a runaway freight car in the Owego yard.  No equipment derailed, damage was cosmetic, and most has been repaired.

The caboose's owner has a written agreement with the Owego & Harford Ry. (OHRY) wherein owner allows railroad to use the caboose on regular freight and passenger runs free of charge, and in return OHRY does not charge owner for storage or switching moves for maintenance purposes, and OHRY performs all running repairs and mechanical maintenance as necessary.  Caboose owner is also listed as an additional named insured on OHRY's liability policy.  It is unknown whether OHRY would continue such an arrangement with the new owner.  This would be a separate matter of negotiation between the buyer and OHRY.

OHRY has an interchange connection with Norfolk Southern in Owego.  Transport to any other location, via rail or road, will be the responsibility of the buyer.

The caboose's owner resides in Syracuse (1.5 hour drive from Owego), is not able to travel to Owego to work on the caboose on a regular basis, and has therefore decided to offer the caboose for sale.
